Officers with the Brantford Police Service were dispatched to attend a report of a motor vehicle theft in progress at a location near Shellard Lane and St. Patrick’s Drive on Wednesday, December 7, 2022.

A concerned citizen observed a man and woman allegedly attempting to steal a motor vehicle and contacted police. The accused parties were unsuccessful in their attempt and fled the scene. The alert citizen obtained a description of the individuals and the vehicle they were currently occupying.

Officers attended and located the accused nearby at Shellard Lane and Conklin Drive where they were both placed under arrest and taken into custody.

Investigation revealed the vehicle they were occupying had been reported stolen from a neighbouring jurisdiction. Further investigation revealed that the accused parties were allegedly involved in another attempted motor vehicle theft at a Market Street location just prior to arriving at the St. Patrick’s Drive location.

A search incident to arrest found the accused in possession of the following:

  • break-in tools 
  • approximately 13.28 grams of suspected crystal methamphetamine 
  • approximately 0.49 grams of suspected cocaine
  • approximately 1635 grams of cannabis
  • a scale and drug paraphernalia 

Investigation indicated that the accused male was in violation of a valid release order and nine driving prohibitions. The accused female was wanted on a valid warrant issued by a neighbouring police service and was in violation of two valid release orders.

As a result, a 35-year-old man from Brantford stands charged with the following:

  • Attempt with Intent, Motor Vehicle Theft x 2, contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Failure to Comply with Judicial Release x 3, contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Possession of Stolen Property (Under $5,000), contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Possession of Break In Instruments, contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Possession for the Purpose – Schedule I – Other Drugs, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • Possession – Schedule I – Cocaine, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • Possession for the Purpose of Distributing – contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • Possession of over 30G of dried Cannabis (or equivalent) in a public place, contrary to the Cannabis Control Act
  • Have Care or Control of Vehicle or Boat with Cannabis Readily Available, contrary to the Cannabis Control Act
  • Operate While Prohibited x2, contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Driving while under suspension x7, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act

Additionally, a 29-year-old female from Brantford stands charged with the following:

  • Attempt with Intent – Motor Vehicle Theft x2, contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Failure to Comply with Judicial Release – Release Order x 2, contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Possession of Stolen Property (Under $5,000), contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Possession Break In Instruments, contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Possession of Stolen Property (Under $5,000), contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Possession for the Purpose – Schedule I – Other Drugs, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • Possession for the Purpose of Distributing – contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  • Possession of over 30G of dried Cannabis (or equivalent) in a public place, contrary to the Cannabis Control Act

Both accused parties were held for a bail hearing. Investigation is still ongoing.
