Brantford man facing Arson and Drug charges

Officers with the Brantford Police Service received a call to report a suspicious vehicle on River Road near Birkett Lane at approximately 4:45 a.m. on Sunday, February 5, 2023.

Officers attended and located the accused in the driver’s seat of the motor vehicle. The vehicle was severely damaged and located in the ditch.

Investigation determined the accused was wanted in relation to an arson that had occurred Friday, February 3, 2023, at approximately 9:45 p.m., at a Charing Cross Street business. 

The accused was subsequently placed under arrest. Search incident to arrest, located approximately 2.9 grams of suspected methamphetamine in possession of the accused.

The accused was transported for a drug recognition expert evaluation to be performed. The evaluating officer formed the opinion that the subject’s ability to operate a conveyance was impaired by a by drugs. The accused refused to comply with additional testing as required by law.

As a result of the investigation, a 40-year-old man from Brantford stands charged with the following: 

  • Arson – damage to property – contrary to the Criminal Code (Inc# 23-05195)
  • Operation While Impaired – Drugs, contrary to the Criminal Code 
  • Failure or Refusal to Comply with Demand, contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Possession – Schedule 1, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act

The accused was held for a bail hearing. 

Additionally, the driver’s licence of the accused was suspended, and the vehicle impounded.
