The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate after a 33-year-old man was shot and killed by Brantford Police early on Friday, January 16, 2026.

Kristy Denette, spokesperson for the SIU, told CHCH News that Brantford Police were initially called to a house in the north end of the city for a domestic disturbance.

“The call came at about 2:30 a.m. And it was a disturbance at a residence on Palomino Drive. And what followed that was there were a number of emergency response team members who came to the scene and there were some negotiations with a male in the residence,” said Kristy Denette, spokesperson for the SIU.

Denette said the man was barricaded inside the house with his wife. Police were negotiating with him at the time when something happened that forced them to go inside the home where he was shot by three different officers.

“There were EMS who tried to provide some life saving measures. Unfortunately the man was pronounced deceased at the scene,” said Denette.

Denette said the woman inside the house was injured at the time, but wouldn’t say if her husband stabbed her.

“It’s a little too early for me to say but I can say that there was a man and woman involved, and there was a disturbance. And then there was a sharp edged knife that was involved. And the woman sustained some injuries and she is in hospital. So that’s what I can tell you right now,” said Denette.

Officials said her injuries aren’t life threatening.

Neighbours in the area told CHCH News that the couple had lived in the home for three years and they had never seen them have any issues.

“It really scares me. That’s scary because we’re not in a vicinity where we get a lot of this stuff. It really is crazy. I don’t really know the people,” said a neighbour.

“I’ve never seen it around here. It’s a lot of families so it’s rare for it to be in this neighborhood,” said another neighbour.

SIU said that the officers were wearing body cameras and there is footage of the shooting.
