Autism Dog Services (ADS) launched its second annual STEPtember Challenge with the goal of raising over ten thousand dollars by Wednesday, September 30, 2026.
The month-long fundraiser involves participants raising money as they walk, run, roll, cycle, or swim, often alongside a dog, to complete 30 kilometres in 30 days.
The 30-kilometre format came from the daily routines of the organization’s puppy raisers and the families who have already received trained service dogs.
“It was a light bulb moment between Vicky Spadoni and I, since most of our puppy raisers have to walk their puppies every day. So why not have them walk one kilometre and collect pledges from family, friends and colleagues as well,” said Adele Alfano, Fund Development Manager for ADS.
According to Alfano, training service dogs takes over two years and costs the organization $25,000 but ADS is accredited with Assistance Dogs International and places its dogs with families at no cost.
“We receive no government funding, so we have got to come up with some creative ideas to engage not only the people within our own service dog community, but the larger community,” said Vicky Spadoni, Executive Director of Autism Dog Services.
TucTucs is among the registered teams this year. It is a local Brantford dog-and-cat treat business owned by a former ADS puppy raiser. The business owner raised a puppy that has been placed as a facility dog with Niagara Police Service and has also recruited participants from across Canada to take part in the challenge under TucTucs’ team name.
Adam Atkinson, a CHCH TV personality and an ADS ambassador, said STEPtember has other benefits besides being a fundraiser.
“It’s a great chance to get out and get some exercise, and give your dogs some exercise. I have three Miniature Schnauzers who are looking forward to the additional walks,” said Atkinson.
