Brantford Police ServiceSIU investigating Brantford police officer after early morning incident

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the discharge of a firearm by a police officer in Brantford early in the morning on Friday, January 12, 2024.

Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • At approximately 3:30 a.m. on January 12, 2024, a Brantford Police Service officer observed a white van of interest at the Petro Canada gas station located at Fairview Drive and West Street. The officer called for assistance.
  • There was an interaction, and one officer discharged his firearm several times.
  • Shortly after, the 34-year-old man was arrested. The man was not struck or injured as a result of the firearm discharge. He was taken to hospital.

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

Even in cases of no serious injury or death, the Special Investigations Unit Act, 2019 dictates that the discharge of a firearm by an officer falls within the jurisdiction of the SIU.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php
