Brantford Police Service announced the roll-out of body-worn cameras for front-line officers on Wednesday, May 21, 2025.
The deployment of the equipment is already underway and is expected to be operational for all officers by the end of 2025.
The use of body-worn cameras will be used during interactions with the public including traffic stops, calls for service, and enforcement activities. Officers will follow strict protocols regarding the activation, de-activation and storage of footage in accordance with legal standards and privacy regulations.
The body-worn cameras are worn on the chest of an officer’s uniform, are highly visible, and have a display light to indicate the recording has been activated and the encounter is being recorded.
The body-worn cameras will provide objective video recordings of interactions between officers and members of the public, gathering evidence, which could be utilized in the prosecution of offences.
The Brantford Police Service are implementing this equipment as a result of provincial grant funding available to leverage technology, which will enhance community and officer safety, increasing transparency and accountability in policing.
The use of this technology respects citizens’ privacy and rights as recognized under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and is in full compliance with the guidelines on the use of body-worn cameras by police services as released by the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC).
The collection, retention, use, and disclosure of any personal information obtained from the ALPR/ICC’s is done in full compliance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA).
