Throughout the month of October, the Brantford Food Bank is asking community members to help out and get involved in building its food stores to 50,000-pounds.
The Food Bank is encouraging people to host a food drive, donate at local grocery stores and LCBO locations, volunteer, make a financial contribution, or drop off personal donations directly at the Brantford Food Bank at 1100 Clarence Street S.
The food collected during its Thanks4Giving push “will help provide neighbours in need with essential items such as proteins, school snacks, and pantry staples for the busy holiday season ahead,” reads its press release.
Earlier this year, Brantford City Council declared a food insecurity emergency because so many struggle to put food on their tables.
“The Thanks4Giving Food Drive shows what’s possible when our community unites to take action”, says Heather Vanner, executive director of community resource service, which operates the Brantford Food Bank.
“With Brantford experiencing a food insecurity emergency and one in 10 Brantford residents relying on our services, the need is greater than ever.”
Last year, the Thanks4Giving Food Drive brought in just over 31,000 pounds. of food so this year the Brantford Food Bank has set an admirable and ambitious goal of 50,000, which is enough food to support the Food Bank for one month.
Currently, the food bank has raised a total of 11,569 pounds this month, but with only two more weeks left in October, this is still an urgent need to meet the goal of 50,000. The food bank will be at the Brantford Farmers Market October 17 and 18th and 24 and 25th to accept food and monetary donations.
