County of Brant resident loses nearly $20,000 in cryptocurrency investment scam

Police are urging the public to exercise extreme caution when considering investment opportunities, following an incident where a community member was defrauded of $18,500 in a cryptocurrency scam.

At approximately 10:51 a.m. on Monday, June 16, 2025, the Brant County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated a fraud at a County of Brant address.

It was determined that the victim had responded to an online advertisement promoting an investment opportunity. They were later contacted by someone claiming to be an investor, who encouraged them to invest in cryptocurrency with the promise of significant returns on their initial investment.

Over the course of several months, the victim invested approximately $18, 500 but received no returns. Upon realizing it was a scam, they contacted police.

Frauds and scams are attempted daily through online platforms, phone calls, texts, letters, or faxes. Fraud is a multi-million-dollar enterprise that will only cease when the perpetrators stop profiting.

To avoid falling victim to similar investment scams, follow these key tips:

·      Research and verify the legitimacy of investment opportunities and the entities offering them.

·      Exercise caution when confronted with investments promising high returns with little risk. Overly optimistic claims may signal a potential scam.

·      Avoid sharing sensitive information with unfamiliar parties.
