Over 150 people took part in the annual Terry Fox Run on Sunday, September 20, 2026, in support of
The annual event, which is held at the Steve Brown Sports Complex, and in support of cancer research through the Terry Fox Foundation raised $23,480 this year.
Jack Tannetta, a Wales native who moved to Canada, said the event was his first introduction to Terry Fox’s story.
“We don’t have anything like this over there,” said Tannetta. I think it’s great to remember such a great person as Terry Fox. It’s very important to join these sorts of events, remember people, and give back to the community as well.”
Garrett Riley, a silver medalist in para ice hockey at the 2022 Beijing Paralympics and Brantford resident, attended the run and spoke about its personal significance.
“It’s really near and dear to my heart,” said Riley, who first took part in Terry Fox Runs as a student in elementary school, before osteosarcoma led to the amputation of his leg, and credited advances in prosthetics since Fox’s 1980 Marathon of Hope with making daily life easier for amputees today.
David Sargent has taken part in the Brantford run for 25 years. This year would have marked another run, but he did not participate after his cancer returned in January 2026.
“My goal in 2005 was to try and raise $1,000 a year for every year that I do the run,” said Sargent, “I more than tripled what my goal was as I have raised over $70,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation,” Sargent said, adding that he lost both of his parents to cancer over the course of his years participating in the run, and that the fundraising has taken on a deeper personal meaning as a result.
Mike Bitton, an organizer of the Brantford run, said the event continues to grow year after year.
“It’s not only an opportunity for cancer research and raising funds, but it’s a chance for community members to all come together and celebrate Terry’s legacy,” said Bitton.
