Two individuals are facing charges after a traffic stop investigation resulted in the seizure of a large quantity of contraband tobacco. 

A member from the Brant County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop with a vehicle on Wilson Street West in Ancaster at approximately 5:35 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

 As a result of the investigation approximately 2,000,000 unmarked cigarettes were seized, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. 

 The 36-year-old driver, Stephen BURROWS of Phelpston, has been charged with the following offences: 

·        Trafficking in Contraband Tobacco

·        Possess unmarked cigarettes for sale

·        Possess unmarked cigarettes

·        Drive motor vehicle, no permit

·        Use plate not authorized for vehicle

·        Operate vehicle – fail to display inspection sticker or proof (two counts)

·        Disobey stop sign – fail to stop

The accused, Stephen BURROWS, is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Hamilton on September 25, 2026.

Additionally, a 57-year-old individual from Bala, has also been charged with:  

·                Permit use of plate not authorized for vehicle
