Police search for fraud suspects involved in vehicle sale

Brant OPPPolice search for fraud suspects involved in vehicle sale

County of Brant OPP are appealing for public assistance in identifying fraud suspects involved in a private vehicle sale in Paris, Ontario.

Officers say they responded after a resident reported being defrauded during a private vehicle sale arranged through Facebook Marketplace on January 7, 2026.

The seller told police he had listed his vehicle for $6,500 when two male buyers-who had been communicating with him by text-arrived at his home to inspect the car.

During the viewing, one suspect spoke with the complainant while the second examined the vehicle’s engine compartment. The suspect then moved to the rear underside of the vehicle.

Moments later, when the complainant started the engine at the suspects’ request, the vehicle began running roughly and emitting white smoke from the exhaust. The suspects claimed the vehicle was no longer in good condition and refused to pay the agreed-upon price.

After negotiating, the complainant ultimately accepted a significantly lower offer of $1,000. After the vehicle was towed from the property, the complainant counted the cash provided and discovered only $800.

The complainant believes the suspects may have tampered with the vehicle to intentionally damage it and reduce its value. The suspect descriptions are as follows:

  • Suspect 1: Tall, possibly East Indian, bearded, with tattoos on his right hand.
  • Suspect 2: Short, stocky, possibly East Indian, and bearded.

The suspects identified themselves through text messages as “Anthony” and “Roffey,” though their full names remain unknown.

Brant County OPP are reminding residents to remain vigilant when buying or selling items online. Sellers are encouraged to verify identities, conduct transactions in public locations when possible, and report any suspicious behavior.
