Peter Khill found guilty of manslaughter in 2016 death of Six Nations man

Local NewsPeter Khill found guilty of manslaughter in 2016 death of Six Nations man

A Binbrook man who admitted to fatally shooting a Six Nations man stealing his truck in his driveway six years ago has been found guilty of manslaughter.

Twelve jurors began deliberating Thursday and were tasked with unanimously determining whether Khill was guilty of second-degree murder or of the lesser charge of manslaughter.

In February 2016, Khill shot and killed 29-year-old Jonathan Styres. The man was on Khill’s rural Hamilton property and had broken into his pickup truck when the shooting occurred.

Khill has testified that he acted in self defense as he believed Styres was armed, even though he was not.

The Crown had emphasized that Khill did not call 911 when he noticed someone was on his property. Instead, he grabbed his shotgun and went outside.

The defence argued that Khill did not want to kill anyone that night and even performed CPR on Styres afterwards.
