Grand Erie Public HealthGrand Erie Public Health issues suspension notices for students

Grand Erie Public Health (GEPH) has issued suspension notices under the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA) for students born in 2009, 2017, and 2018 in the City of Brantford, County of Brant, Haldimand County, and Norfolk County.

The goal of the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA) in Ontario is to protect the health of children through routine immunizations to help prevent outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases in schools. Under the act, students are required to update their immunization records with public health to attend school.

2,326 suspension notices have been issued to students with incomplete immunization records in January. Following ongoing outreach, communication, and immunization clinics, 87.3 per cent of suspension orders have been rescinded, resulting in 296 students facing suspension as of today, Tuesday, March 31, 2026.

“Routine childhood immunizations play a vital role in keeping our students and schools protected from serious vaccine-preventable diseases. The Ontario Immunization of School Pupils Act encourages safe and effective vaccination supported by trusted scientific evidence. It is a parent or caregiver’s responsibility to ensure their child’s immunization records are up to date with public health. We thank everyone for continuing to work together to keep our children and communities healthy and safe,” said Dr. Jason Malenfant, Medical Officer of Health, Grand Erie Public Health.

Grand Erie Public Health will be offering clinics across the region, supporting suspended students with updating their immunization records, administering required vaccines, and applying valid exemptions to return students to school as quickly as possible.
