With the winter storm here, the County of Brant reminds motorists to stay a safe distance back from snow plows when you see blue flashing lights.
“Snow plows, salt and sand trucks must travel slower than regular traffic,” said Greg Demers, Director of Roads at the County of Brant. “Sight lines and visibility near a working snow plow are significantly reduced by blowing snow. Please be patient.”
It is dangerous to pass either between or around working snow plows because of blowing snow and the ridge of snow created from the plow. This could result in an avoidable accident.
“We want everyone to get home safely. When you see the blue flashing lights of a snow plow, remain a safe distance back,” said Demers. “The road surface is always better behind the plow than in front of it.”
When encountering an oncoming snow plow, move as far away from the centreline of the pavement as you safely can.
“There are 2200 lane kilometers within the County of Brant. 2200 kilometers is the same distance as driving from Paris, Ontario to the tip of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia,” said Demers. “Plowing and treating roads takes time. Roads are plowed in order of priority. Roads that have a high amount of vehicle traffic and serve as major travel routes are prioritized over quiet backroads.”
