County awarded grant to expand tree-planting program

County of BrantCounty awarded grant to expand tree-planting program

County of Brant announced it has been awarded $79,440 in funding by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Green Municipal Fund (GMF) Growing Canada’s Community Canopies initiative, financed by the Government of Canada and administered by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM).

This funding will support a two-year community tree planting initiative that will help strengthen Brant’s urban forest canopy, enhance biodiversity, and promote climate resilience. Planting will take place across parks, cemeteries, and natural spaces throughout the County, focusing on areas with lower canopy cover and higher population density.

Native species such as tulip trees, maples, oaks, elms, and dogwoods will be planted for their ability to thrive in local conditions and support wildlife and pollinators.

“This grant allows us to build a greener and healthier future for everyone in Brant,” said David Bailey, Mayor for the County of Brant. “We’re not only planting trees, we’re growing community pride, shade for our children, and a legacy that future generations will thank us for. I encourage everyone to get involved and share their ideas on where new trees should be planted.”

To help guide this effort, residents are invited to share their thoughts on where additional trees should be planted to enhance shade, beauty, and environmental benefits in their neighbourhoods.

“We’re excited to partner with our community to help shape where and how trees are planted across the County,” said Trent Meyers, Forestry Supervisor for the County of Brant. “By sharing your ideas, you’re directly contributing to the health of our local ecosystem and helping us reach our goal of achieving 30% canopy cover. Every voice, and every tree, counts.”
