City of Brantford will be removing the Alexandra Park Cannon from its current location at 265 Dalhousie Street for necessary conservation work. Once the conservation work is complete, the Alexandra Park Cannon will be viewable at the Canadian Military Heritage Museum where it can be appropriately stabilized and appreciated for its historical significance in a museum setting for years to come.
For several years, the Alexandra Park Cannon has been deteriorating from snowmelt and salt spray, which are highly corrosive and can cause significant damage. If left outdoors, it has an estimated lifespan of 10 to 15 years remaining, even with costly remediation and conservation efforts. To ensure long-term sustainability, City staff recommended in March 2025 that the Alexandra Park Cannon be deaccessioned from the City’s Public Art Collection and donated to the Canadian Military Heritage Museum. Brantford City Council supported this recommendation.
Over the next few months, the cannon will be conserved onsite by a conservator accredited with the Canadian Association of Professional Conservators’ until it is ready to be displayed inside the museum. The public will be updated when it becomes available for public viewing.
