Brantford collects 200 tons of organic waste from Green Bin Program

City of BrantfordBrantford collects 200 tons of organic waste from Green Bin Program

The City of Brantford collected a total of 200 tons of organic waste from residents participating in the Green Bin program during the first month of collection.

“Approximately 28 per cent of residents are currently participating in the City’s Green Bin program,” said Selvi Kongara, Director of Environmental Services for the City of Brantford. “This is a great start and is in line with the rate of participation at launch of other communities of our size. We’re confident that this number will increase as residents become more familiar with the program and its benefits.”

Green bin collection began on Wednesday, November 1 and to encourage participation the City launched a Green Bin to Win contest which ran from November 1 to 29, 2023. Residents were asked to participate in a different task each week to raise awareness about how to properly use the green bin.

The City received a total of 580 entries in the contest and awarded four weekly winners $100 City of Brantford Recreation gift certificates and one $500 City of Brantford Recreation gift certificate to a grand prize winner.

Carly Miller, the winner of the $500 City of Brantford Recreation gift certificate grand prize, was excited to participate in the Green Bin to Win contest and share their experience with using their new green bin and kitchen catcher.

“My family was so excited to receive our green bin and start doing our part to reduce landfill waste,” says Miller. “It was a great opportunity to start conversations about how to properly sort household waste and we’ve learned so much since the program started. We’ve challenged ourselves to only have one garbage bag at the curbside on garbage day since we received our green bin and have been able to meet that challenge every week.”
