Annual Wheels on the Pavement to return in May

City of Brantford, along with several neighbourhood associations, will be hosting the fourth Annual Wheels on the Pavement event in celebration of National Public Works Week on Sunday, May 26, 2024.

The theme for National Public Works Week in 2024 is ‘Advancing Quality of Life for All’ to shine a spotlight on the way public works professionals advance the quality of life, as they silently work to serve the community.

“National Public Works Week is a time to celebrate the successes of Public Works and educate the community on what we do and how we do it. Wheels on the Pavement is an amazing annual event that allows residents the opportunity to get up close and interact with a variety of vehicles that are used during our day-to-day operations,” said Inderjit Hans, Commissioner of Public Works for the City of Brantford.

Wheels on the Pavement, which will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Brantford and District Civic Centre, promises to be an engaging experience for everyone, with opportunities to get up close, and explore a wide variety of trucks and emergency vehicles. Public Works vehicles include the water valve, sewer combo and plow trucks, front loader, as well as Brantford Transit and Brantford Lift busses. Attendees can also explore Emergency Medical Service (EMS) vehicles such as police cruisers, fire trucks and ambulance. It’s a chance for residents to see, touch, and learn more about the vehicles that play a crucial role in our community and meet some of the skilled people that operate them.

Guests will not want to miss seeing the Alpha Power lifters pull a rotator truck, which is one of the biggest and heaviest tow trucks out there, weighing in at 72,000 pounds. The day will also feature family-friendly entertainment and interactive activities, and meet and greets with fun inflatable characters.

“We look forward to seeing families connect and enjoy our fourth annual Wheels on the Pavement event.  There will be many new vehicles introduced this year that you won’t want to miss exploring,” added Jayme Wilson, Chair of the Downtown Central Neighbourhood Association.

Community partner booths will be on-site, providing valuable information about their services and offering insights into how they contribute to the community. For those looking to enjoy some tasty treats, a variety of food options will be available for purchase.

Attendees can park for free in the Earl Haig Family Fun Park parking lot and in the Market Street Parkade. However, residents are encouraged to bike to the event and take advantage of the free supervised bicycle valet that will be offered throughout the event. Brantford Transit is also available to attendees looking for transportation. Schedules, routes and rates are available online at Brantford.ca/Transit.

Help fill a truck! Event organizers will be collecting non-perishables and school safe snacks such as granola bars, apple sauce, fruit cups, etc. for the Gifts of the Heart, a not-for-profit organization that feeds over 250 children in local Brantford schools. Donations are greatly appreciated to help support this great cause.
