CrimeBarricaded man who shot at police in Six Nations charged with attempted murder

A 29-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder and multiple firearm-related offences after barricading himself in a home and shooting at police in Six Nations of the Grand River last week.

Ontario Provincial Police and Six Nations Police responded around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 30, 2023 to an active weapons investigation on Sixth Line between Chiefswood and Tuscarora roads in Ohsweken.

Officers confirmed that a man had barricaded himself and fired a gun at police.

Nearby residents were told to shelter-in-place and motorists were asked to avoid the area.

The man was arrested around 9 a.m. Friday when he got out of the home unarmed and surrendered to police.

Investigators say no one was injured.

James Garlow of Ohsweken has been charged with eight separate offences, including attempted murder, assault with a weapon and discharging a firearm with intent, among others.

Additional charges related to offences committed against police are expected to be laid as the investigation continues.

The Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate.

Garlow was scheduled to appear in court Monday.
